Managing Through Complexity
Dalhousie University's award winning Faculty of Management invites you to attend the Managing Through Complexity seminar. This is the inaugural event in Dalhousie University new Executive Leadership Series for career professionals to acquire latest best practices in management and organization building and also to network with peers in the industry. This event is available at various times in two different formats: a short 2-hr Lunch and Learn session and/or 6-hr, more intensive and in-depth class.
Lunch and Learn - Noon to 2pm
Complexity is the newest thinking from science that is forcing managers and policy makers to re-examine how they think, analyze, react and plan. Scientists have for years thought of issues as either being simple, complicated or complex. This lunch and learn will introduce the science of complexity and contrast it with the more routinely used and outdated complicated and simple modes of thinking.

Two-Day Seminar - 9am - 5pm
Complexity is the newest thinking from science that is forcing managers and policy makers to re-examine how they think, analyze, react and plan. Scientists have for years thought of issues as either being simple, complicated or complex. Simple tasks are those like baking a cake, while complicated tasks are those like building a car. A simple task can be done with approximations, while a complicated task has many steps, all of which must be followed exactly. A complex system is like raising a teenager. There is no recipe book or owners manual to a complex system, and the system is highly dependent on unknown external conditions and subject to rapid change (such as what their friends think.) Despite the fact that most business or policy issues are complex, the non-scientific world has only focused on simple and complicated thinking. This leading edge semilnar will introduce the science of complexity and contrast it with the more routinely used and outdated complicated and simple modes of thinking. After completing the seminar, the senior manager or policy analyst will be equipped with a powerful new methodology of thinking and implementing solutions in the volatile and dynamic world around us.
At the end of this highly interactive seminar participants will:
- know the central concepts of complexity theory and how it applies to the various functions of a business or a not-for-profit organization
- understand the differences between simple systems, complicated systems and complex systems
- be able to determine whether a system is simple, complicated or complex
- identify the different types of responses required for simple, complicated and complex systems
- recognize why complexity thinking is the best method for developing paradigm shifts and maximizing business effectiveness
- appreciate why an emphasis on increasing complication will likely be inefficient at best and more likely counterproductive
- become a thought leader within their organization
